UK TRANSIT VISA GUIDE FOR KENYAN CITIZENS

Are you planning to transit through the UK and unsure which visa to apply for – or whether you need one at all?

The visa you need depends on whether you pass through UK border control during your stopover. In some cases, Kenyan travellers can transit through the UK without a visa if they meet specific conditions.

This guide explains everything Kenyan citizens need to know about:

  • Types of UK transit visas
  • Who needs one and who is exempt
  • Costs and application process in Kenya
  • Transit without a visa options

Do Kenyan Citizens Need a UK Transit Visa?

Most Kenyan nationals require a UK transit visa unless they already hold another valid UK visa or travel document.

  • A valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
  • An EU Settlement Scheme family permit
  • A Home Office travel document (for refugees or stateless persons)
  • A valid Standard Visitor visa
  • A valid Marriage Visitor visa

Types of UK Transit Visas for Kenyan Citizens

There are three main visa options for Kenyans who need to pass through the UK in transit. The right one depends on whether you will go through UK border control and how long you will stay in the UK.

1. Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV)

This visa is for Kenyans who are only changing flights in the UK and will not go through border control.

  • You must remain in the airport’s international transit area.
  • It applies only if your onward flight is within 24 hours.
  • Cost: £39

2. Visitor in Transit Visa

This visa is required if you will pass through UK border control before taking your next flight. For example, if you need to collect and recheck your luggage.

  • You must leave the UK within 48 hours.
  • Cost: £70

3. Standard Visitor Visa

This visa is necessary if your stopover in the UK is longer than 48 hours, or if you need to transit through the UK frequently over a longer period.

  • Valid for short stays (up to 6 months).
  • Long-term options are available for 2, 5, or 10 years, with a maximum stay of 6 months per visit.
  • Cost starts from £115 (higher for long-term visas).

Transit Without a Visa for Kenyan Citizens

Some Kenyan passport holders can transit through the UK without applying for a transit visa, if they meet the requirements.

General Conditions

You may transit without a visa if you:

  • Arrive and depart by air
  • Have a confirmed onward flight leaving the same day, or before midnight the following day
  • Hold the correct visa or documents for your final destination

Exemptions for Direct Airside Transit (No Border Control)

Kenyan citizens do not need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) if they hold:

  • A valid visa for Canada, the USA, Australia, or New Zealand
  • A permanent residence visa issued by Australia or New Zealand
  • A common format residence permit issued by a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland

Exemptions for Visitor in Transit (With Border Control)

Kenyan citizens may also be exempt from a Visitor in Transit visa if:

  • You are travelling to or from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the USA and have a valid visa for that country.
  • You are travelling from one of those countries and it has been less than 6 months since you last entered with a valid entry visa.
  • You hold a permanent residence permit issued by Australia or New Zealand.

Special Cases for Kenyan Travellers

Travelling to Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man

You usually need a Standard Visitor visa to transit through the UK to these destinations unless exempt.

You do not need a UK visitor visa if:

  • You have a valid visa for the Channel Islands or Isle of Man
  • You hold a valid Irish biometric visa (marked “BC” or “BC BIVS” in the remarks section of the visa)

How to Apply for a UK Transit Visa in Kenya

The application process involves filling out the online visa form, providing your valid passport, proof of your onward ticket, travel itinerary, and in some cases, financial evidence. You will also need to book an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Nairobi to submit biometrics.
