Applying for the Kenyan Short-term Work Permit (Special Pass)
A Special Pass is a temporary immigration authorization that allows foreign nationals to enter Kenya and carry out short-term work activities for a limited period. This pass is designed for individuals who need to perform temporary professional duties, business activities, or project-based assignments that cannot extend beyond six months. It is commonly used by specialists such as consultants, technicians, trainers, or experts hired to complete specific tasks within a short timeframe.
Under Kenyan immigration guidelines, a Special Pass may be granted to:
- Foreign nationals who need to carry out professional or business activities in Kenya for a short period of time.
- Individuals who have secured a temporary work agreement or employment offer from a Kenyan employer.
- Applicants who are waiting for their long-term work permit to be processed but need permission to start work immediately.
Key Conditions of the Special Pass
The Special Pass follows specific rules regarding its duration and renewal:
- The pass is initially granted for one, two, or three months.
- It can be extended once for an additional one, two, or three months.
- The total stay permitted under a Special Pass cannot exceed six months.
- Holders are generally allowed multiple entries into Kenya during the validity period.
- Applications for renewal should be submitted about three to four weeks before the current pass expires.
Family Members Accompanying the Applicant
Family members who wish to travel with the main applicant must follow Kenya’s entry requirements. Spouses and dependent children must obtain Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before entering the country.
If a spouse plans to take up employment in Kenya, they must apply for their own Special Pass and later obtain an appropriate long-term work permit. Work authorization cannot be shared or transferred from the primary applicant to family members.
